Payvand.com - Iranian renowned filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami called off directing
an Opera show in London following the complicated and time-consuming process
that took for Britain to issue visa.

English National Opera (ENO)
Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami has
made a profound impression with the poetic use of Western classical
music in his films. Now he turns to the operatic stage with his
production of Mozart's Così fan tutte.
Winner of the Cannes Film Festival Palme d'Or for his A Taste of
Cherry, Kiarostami has received worldwide acclaim for the simplicity
and psychological depth of his work. Using spectacular filmed
backdrops, he contains the world of Mozart's popular comic opera in
a beautiful period setting. |
Kiarostami was to direct a production of Così Fan Tutte at London's Coliseum.
But according to a
report by Guardian, Kiarostami yesterday announced that he would not be
travelling to the UK to direct the production, because, an ENO spokeswoman said,
he "does not feel he was treated in a respectful way" when applying for his
visa. He found the process "unduly time-consuming and hugely complicated", she
added.

In a statement, Kiarostami said: "I would like to
thank ... ENO for the understanding and support they have shown in this very
complicated but delicate situation. They respected my position and my principles
in spite of the obvious fact that it was putting them in a very precarious and
disagreeable position. I have to confess that this gives me hope; the world is
still a liveable place malgré tout ..."
Kiarostami's assistant Elaine Tyler-Hall will instead perform the show beginning
on May 29.
