TEHRAN, May 9 (Mehr News Agency) -- Tehran Province has the highest number of divorces in the
country, deputy head of Population Studies & Research Center in Asia and the
Pacific said here Saturday. Based on official figures, 22.3% of Tehrani
marriages ended in divorce in 1385 (March 2006-March 2007) Shahla Kazemipour
said.
Iran had 13.3 divorces per 100 of the population in 1385, and, Kazemipour added,
20% of the country's total divorces happened in Tehran.
Ilam Province has the lowest divorce rate in the country followed by the
provinces of East Azerbaijan, Golestan, Yazd, Chahar-Mahal Bakhtiari, and
Sistan-Baluchestan, the deputy added.
According to the figures, Isfahan ranks fifth in divorce rate behind the
provinces of Fars, Markazi, Kordestan, and Tehran, she said.
Sociologists called cultural and economic problems the main reason behind such
an increase in the country's divorce rate over the last years.
