Tehran, May 10, IRNA - Judiciary spokesman Alireza Jamshidi said the number of prisoners in Iran has been decreasing and the figures compared with countries such as US and Russia show that Iran is in better conditions in this concern.
He said the number of prisoners has not increased in recent years adding that the current statistics indicates around 163,000 prisoners in Iran of whom 4 percent are women.
He added the figure is relatively good, because it means Iran has 226 prisoners for 100,000 population, while the figure in the USA and Russia is 600 persons.
He added that Iran ranks 8th in this concern in the region.
Jamshidi said 45 percent of prisoners are related to narcotics which is a high figure.
Concerning the appeal court for Ms. Roxana Saberi ( imprisoned reporter), Jamshidi said her case has been followed like others and the judge has issued his verdict.
Referring to the hue and cry by foreiners in this concern, he said that the related persons in the dossier can protest the verdict. The case is now in the Appeal Court, in which three judges reach a verdict, he added.
The spokesman said the court hearing is on Sunday which may lead to issuing the final verdict.
