Those creating schisms among Muslims are mercenaries: Iran's Supreme Leader

SANANDAJ, Kordestan Province, May 12 (Mehr News Agency) -- Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has stated that those who try to create a rift between Shias and Sunnis are "the enemy's mercenaries".

"Anyone who undermines national unity under a variety of religious pretexts such as supporting Shia or Sunni, whether he is a Shia or a Sunni, he is the enemy's mercenary and the enemy of Islam, whether he knows it or not," he said in Sanandaj during a visit to Kordestan Province on Tuesday.

The Supreme Leader added, "Many of the Salafis and Wahhabis... who are committing terror attacks in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan are not aware of their (own) mercenary (nature), in the same way that a Shia individual who insults the Sunni sanctities is the enemy's mercenary, even if he is not aware (of it)."

Commenting on the upcoming presidential election, he said, "Contrary to the wishes of the enemy, the vigilant Iranian nation will participate in the election... because they regard the election as (part of) the national reputation."

The Supreme Leader highlighted the importance of the presidential election and advised people to be very careful to elect the most qualified candidate.

However, all the candidates whom the Guardian Council selects in the vetting process are qualified, he emphasized.

He also urged the candidates to refrain from mudslinging during the election campaign.

"Sometimes, candidates highlight incorrect (claims) about economic issues and the conditions of the country, which make people worried. One cannot believe that (they are) putting forward so many false issues out of sincerity."

Elsewhere in his remarks, Ayatollah Khamenei praised the role the people of Kordestan played during the Sacred Defense (the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war).

"The Iranian nation will never forget the efforts of the courageous people of this area, who vigilantly recognized the enemy's plots, during the first and most important years of the Islamic Revolution, and bravely confronted them."

"Our view of Kordestan Province is a view replete with compassion, brotherhood, unity, and empathy, and anyone who opposes this view acts against the system's policy," he said.
