Protesters set fires in the streets of Tehran in response to the tear
gas thrown at them by the security forces |
The international community reacted to clashes
between Iranian people and security forces today on the anniversary of the
occupation of the US embassy 30 years ago.
White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said: "We obviously have seen and are
following the reports of this, and hope greatly that violence will not spread,"
according to Associated Press.
Reportedly police and paramilitary forces have attacked election protesters
chanting anti-government slogans on the streets with batons and tear bombs.
All the country’s major cities including Tehran,
Shiraz, Esfahan, Mashad and Tabriz have witnessed violent clashes between
protesters and security forces. Reportedly there have also been several arrests
although the number of arrests has not been confirmed.
Opposition leader Mehdi Karroubi was attacked
with tear bombs which injured one of his bodyguards.
Security forces also surrounded Farhangestan Honar where MirHosein Mousavi’s
office is located. The chief opponent of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was impeded from
exiting the building and joining the demonstrations.

Basij militia forces
French foreign ministry also condemned “violent
attacks on peaceful protesters in Tehran,” once video images of the clashes
between plain clothes and Special Forces with protesters were relayed abroad.
Eyewitnesses report people were chanting anti-government slogans more focused
toward Ayatollah Khamenei the supreme leader. The new chant “Obama, Obama!
You’re either with them or with us!” was added to the protest chants. The US
president has called for re-establishment of diplomatic relations between Tehran
and Washington after three decades.

In addition to University students joining
demonstrators in this year’s November 4th ceremonies, there were also people
from different walks of life amongst the demonstrators which transformed the
shape of the ceremonies this year.
