Iran eliminated from U-17 World Cup after loss to Uruguay

Press TV - A pair of late goals from Sebastian Gallegos have helped Uruguay defeat Iran 2-1 in extra-time at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup underway in Nigeria.

The 90th minute came and went, and the game went to extra-time in Calabar on Thursday night.

Finally, Uruguay broke the deadlock in the 104th minute when the best player on the pitch, Gallegos, fired a low shot, which slipped underneath the Iranian goalie Iman Sadeqi.

Ten minutes later, the Asian champions, Iran, were reduced to ten men when Iman Shirazi was sent off with his second yellow card.

The Atletico Madrid starlet added his second goal in the 117th minute when he lobbed the goalkeeper brilliantly.

Iran, under Ali Doustimehr, cut the deficit in half after substitute midfielder Afshin Esmaeil pulled one of the goals back in the last seconds of the game.

Iran accrued seven points from three matches in the first round of the tournament after it thrashed Gambia 2-0, held a goalless draw against Colombia and defeated the European runners-up, the Netherlands, 1-0.

In other matches same day, Spain devastated Burkina Faso 4-1, South Korea beat Mexico in penalty shootouts and hosts Nigeria hammered New Zealand 5-0.
