Opposition leader, Mehdi Karroubi posted a video message on Tagheer website criticizing the "double-dealings" of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's government in its relations with the US. On the video massage which was posted on the Etemaad-e Melli Party website, Mr. Karroubi claimed to be "perplexed" by the Islamic Republic's foreign policies which have all the signs of being "lost."
The disputing candidate of the June presidential
elections cited the Member of Parliament, Mohammadreza Mirtajaldini saying in
his last trip to the US, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad met with
50 prominent American figures for over two hours. The group was reportedly
comprised of politicians, academics, journalists and theoreticians. Mr. Karroubi
claims the discussions were focused on Iran-US relations, Afghanistan as well as
oil and nuclear negotiations.
The opposition leader claims: "If one-tenth of such a meeting had occurred at the time of the previous governments in the past twenty years, demonstrators especially in Qom, Tehran and Tabriz would be in a frenzy."
Mr. Karroubi expresses surprise that the chain of state media has no comments on these government dealings with the US. He adds that the nation's interests would not be a casualty of the government's secret dealings with 50 American figures.
Mehdi Karroubi maintained that the government's "double-dealings" will destroy people's trust in the Islamic Republic.
The opposition leader also condemned the "violent" confrontation of government forces with protesters on November 4. He also confirmed the attacks on himself and his companions on that day which led to the hospitalization of two his bodyguards.
The former speaker of the parliament emphasized that he had made every effort to stop demonstrators from using "deviating" slogans.
The opposition leaders MirHosein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi have been trying to contain the election protests within the framework of the Islamic Republic and to stop it from becoming an anti-regime movement.
Reformist Shiite cleric, Ayatollah Montazeri, former president, Mohammad Khatami and Former interior minister, Abdollah Nouri condemned the attack carried out by security forces on Mr. Karroubi on November 4.
November 4 is the anniversary of the seizure of the US embassy in Iran and is observed annually in Iran with anti-US marches and speeches. This year, election protesters used it as an opportunity to demonstrate on the streets of Iran's major cities to express their disapproval of the alleged fraud that led to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's election as the tenth president of Iran
Demonstrators were attacked by the specials police forces. Police announced that 109 people were arrested of which some were released on the same day and the rest were sent to judiciary officials.
