Head of Kurdistan judiciary AliAkbar Gerousi announced that Ehsan Fatahian was hanged today in the central prison of Sanadaj. Fars news agency reports that the sentence was carried out this morning, on Wednesday in the presence of security and judiciary officials. AliAkbar Gerousi claimed: "Activities against national security through armed activities were amongst the crimes committed by Fatahian."
28-year-old Ehsan Fatahian was arrested last year and was primarily sentenced to ten years imprisonment. However, later the charge of armed activities was added to his charges and his sentence changed to execution.
Amnesty International, Kurdistan Human Rights Organization, International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran as well as the young man's family wrote letters and issued statements calling on Ayatollah Larijani, Head of the judiciary to stop his execution. However, their efforts and the efforts of numerous news websites and bloggers met with Ayatollah Larijani's silence and Ehsan Fatahian was executed today.
Fatahian family maintains that a glance at the file would have changed the fate of their son by revealing the unjust circumstances of his conviction.
Amnesty International reports that 346 people were executed in Iran last year placing Iran in the second place for the highest number of state executions in the world.
