Suspicions over 'heart attack' death of Iranian doctor who knew too much - TIMES Online
Ramin Pourandarjani was a brilliant medical student with a promising future, until he was found dead in a dormitory at Tehran police headquarters last week. He is now the new cause célèbre of the Iranian Opposition, with MPs and Western organisations demanding an investigation into the death of a man who knew too much.
The official cause of death for the physician is heart attack but there is evidence that regime officials drove him to suicide or murdered him because he witnessed the brutality used against opposition detainees after the disputed election in June.
Dr Pourandarjani, 26, attended a school for gifted children, graduated with distinction from the University of Tabriz and was doing his two-year national service at the Kahrizak detention centre in Tehran during the June protests.
Police Commander Esmail Ahmadi Moghaddam confirmed today that Kahrizak physician, Ramin Pourandarjani was summoned by the police and threatened to five years imprisonment. Ramin Pourandarjani died last Tuesday at his retreat in the medical building of the security forces and reformist websites have described his death as suspicious.
ILNA reports that Commander Ahmadi Moghaddam told reporters today that this doctor, who was serving his mandatory military duty, had been summoned as an accused and released on certain conditions.
Mr. Ahmadi Moghaddam claimed that "I believe the cause of his death is suicide because of losing heart. Reports about the death being suspicious are not true."
Brigadier- General Ahmadi Moghaddam also maintained that Pourandarjani was not the permanent physician at Kahrizak but rather visited the detention centre two or three times per week.
Ramin Pourandarjani's funeral
In the post-election crackdown on
protesters, a number of protesters were sent to Kahrizak detention centre and
soon after reports of death, torture and rape of detainees surfaced from this
detention centre. Kahrizak was closed down by the order of the supreme leader
and investigations about the charges of violations against detainee rights at
this centre have been delayed for months.
IRNA reported that the special parliamentary committee is following up on the cause of Ramin Pourandarjani's death.
Mowjcamp, the opposition website reported yesterday that prior to his death, "Dr. Pourandarjani had described the details of Ruholamini's death and other Kahrizak crimes at a meeting with the special parliamentary committee."
