Mashhad Ardehal is a village 42 kilometers east of city of Kashan in central
Iran. The mausoleum of Soltan Ali, son of the 5th Shiite Imam Mohammad
Bagher, is located in this village. It is said that when Soltan Ali was killed
by the governor's forces in an uneven battle in Ardehal, the people of the area
rushed to the place and wrapped his body in a rug. They then washed the body in
a creek nearby before burying him. Since then thousands of people hold a
ceremony each year on the second Friday of the Iranian month of Mehr to
mark the death of Soltan Ali.

They say there are two reasons people hold sticks in their hand during this
event. First they use the sticks for washing the rugs; and second they display
the sticks demanding revenge for the martyrdom of Soltan Ali.
