Student activists protested the presence of head of Iran 's human rights headquarters Mohammad Javad Larijani at Sharif University in Tehran . Mr. Larijani spoke in support of the supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei calling him "the anchor and greatest support of democracy" in Iran and one of the "most intelligent" leaders in the world of Islam.
Mohammad Javad Larijani
As he spoke yesterday at the
University, student activists shouted slogans against his political stance and
the government of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Larijani claimed that Mr. Khamenei is clearly a supporter of democracy because he gave "permission" to Mohammad Khatami to serve as president for eight years.
Mohammad Khatami is currently considered as one of the top leaders of the opposition. In his eight years of presidency, he also attempted to give a more reformist direction to the government but failed to give much support to the student movement in the universities.
Mohammad Javad Larijani emphasized the unmatched
"intelligence" of Ayatollah Khamenei and Ayatollah Rafsanjani which according to
him should be held to high regard by all Iranians.
Facing students that chanted "Government risen from a coup! Resign! Resign!" Larijani claimed: "The coup has been defeated. Coup is what Mousavi committed."
ILNA cites Larijani saying the person who on the night of June 11 at 11 p.m. announced himself to be the winner of the elections "on his own" was opposing the leader and this kind of action is the aim of " America , Israel , the Anti-revolutionaries and Britain 's Gordon Brown."
MirHosein Mousavi, chief opponent of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, on the night of June 11 one hour after the closing of the polls, announced himself the winner of the elections at a press meeting. A day later, Ayatolah Khamenei issued a statement announcing Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as the winner.
Since then the country has been witness to nationwide protests. The most recent of them is the student protests against Mr. Larijani's speech in Sharif University .
Advar News Website reports that students booed
and left the room during Larijani's speech. Outside the room, students chanted:
"Death to the dictator!" and "Government risen from a coup! Resign; resign!"
ILNA reports that Mr. Larijani reacted to the chants saying the students should stop following the "popular literature of the Western websites" and follow their own literature and ways.
He also condemned the language of Mousavi and his supporters accusing them of slandering the government.
MirHosein Mousavi has been the main target of Mr. Larijani's attacks in his recent speeches. Last week Mr. Larijani accused him of the highest form of treason.
MirHosein Mousavi denies the legitimacy of the current government and has vowed to pursue his charges through legal means. Government hardliners have repeatedly called for his prosecution.
Mohammad Javad Larijani is the brother of Ali and Sadegh Larijani who currently hold the top posts of Speaker of the Parliament and Head of Judiciary.
