Iran's Opposition Leader Karroubi Welcomes Court Appearance

Report by Radio Zamaneh

Mehdi Karroubi

Mehdi Karroubi welcomed the Prosecutor-General's announcement that "MirHosein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi's court will take place in time." The judiciary has announced that Mehdi Karroubi's file will be processed at the special court for the clergy.

Advar News, Danesh-Amoughtegan (University alumni) news outlet quoted Mr. Karroubi saying: "I fully welcome this event so that if in all the years, for certain considerations, I have refrained from saying certain things, now I will use this opportunity to describe them in full detail."

The disputing candidate of the June presidential elections who was giving a public speech to a group of seminarians exclaimed that he has no fear of legal action because he will use it as an opportunity to stand by his demands and reveal the truth.

Mehdi Karroubi who publicized reports of detainee abuse and torture in Iranian prisons following the post-election unrest, has been accused by the judiciary of fabricating evidence and making baseless accusations.

The judiciary panel investigating the detainee rights violations has called for legal action against Mr. Karroubi but he has remained undeterred in his support for victims of the government crackdown on election protesters.

Since numerous news publications connected with the opposition have been banned and reformist websites are regularly being filtered to stop the dissemination of opposition news, Mehdi Karroubi has openly welcomed the opportunity to appear in court as a chance to make public statements regarding his claims regarding fraud in the elections and the abuse and torture of protesters in prisons.

MirHosein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi have already invited the national television network Seda-va-Sima to give them air time to defend themselves against the numerous accusations that state media has been consistently writing and broadcasting against them.
