Photos: Construction of Bandar Abbas Stadium, 13 years after start

The construction of the soccer stadium in Bandar
Abbas has not been completed after 13 years. The delay has been blamed on the
previous contractor which was recently replaced. But the project is also
suffering from lack of adequate funding which is threatening the delayed opening
scheduled for March 2010. (see related

Hormozgan
is one of the 30 provinces of Iran. It is in the south of the country,
facing Oman. Its area is 68,475 km2, and its provincial capital is
Bandar Abbas. The province has 14 islands located in the Persian Gulf,
and 1,000 km of coastline.
Bandar Abbas is
a port city which occupies a strategic position on the narrow
Straits of Hormuz, and it is the location of the main base of the
Iranian Navy. It had an estimated population of 352,173 in 2005. |

Long Wait For Freedom
Following photos show the construction progress of Azadi Stadium in the city
of Shiraz. Azadi means means freedom in Persian. The residents of Shiraz have
been waiting for 13 years now to see the completion of the construction and
walking into the Azadi Stadium.
