Iranian Canoeist Said To Seek Asylum In Germany

A member of the Iranian women's national dragon boat team who was in the Czech Republic along with teammates to take part in an international tournament has reportedly traveled to Germany to seek asylum, RFE/RL's Radio Farda reports.

Mina Alizadeh reportedly asked to stay at the hotel to rest on the last day of the Iranian team's Czech visit.

But when the team's coach and other members returned to the hotel, they discovered that Alizadeh had left her room.

Iran's boating federation said Alizadeh informed the team that she had gone with her brother to Germany, where he lives.

Radio Farda quoted the team's coach as saying that Alizadeh's trip to Germany was coordinated and planned in advance.

The dragon-boat team, which is a form of long canoe, returned to Tehran on September 1.
