The peace before the storm?

Ayatollah Khamenei's representative in Tehran University says "the leaders, architects and advisers of the recent unrest have to be confronted in order to ensure peace in the universities."

Ebrahim Kalantari

Ebrahim Kalantari told Fars news agency: "With the start of the new academic year, there is obviously an air of preparations for disturbances." However, he warned students to stay away from all political provocations.

On Monday, Ali Fasli, a senior Revolutionary Guard commander also warned of "suspicious rumors" about protests as the universities prepare to start their fall term. The government is trying to neutralize student protests before they spark.

At the same time the new minister of science has rejected any possibility of unrest by confirming that there will be no delays in the opening of the universities and that it will be business as usual in Iranian universities.

Following the June presidential elections university students were attacked and viciously beaten in their dorm. According to Norooz website some students were killed in this incident. Numerous students are currently in prison from the post-election protests. Many students have also been called into disciplinary and security committees for investigation and inquisition.

171 Iranian professors and graduate students from Iranian and foreign universities have signed a letter urging Ayatollah Larijani, head of judiciary, to release the students.
