Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani
Akabar Hashemi Rafsanjani, former president of Iran and current chairman of the Expediency Council and the Assembly of Experts called on people to join the Qods Day march to give "a wake up call to all the neglectful."

In an unprecedented announcement to Iranian people, the powerful cleric assured them that "the dawn of truth will always arise after the darkest hour of night."

Ayatollah Rafsanjani described occupied Palestine as the "symbol of oppression and captivity by an illegitimate, fraudulent and usurping government." He added: "For over 30 years now, free thinkers and righteous justice seekers all over the world have marched the streets to cry out their disapproval of the crimes and greed of a minority group."

"The meaningful presence of people," Chairman of Assembly of Experts goes on to say, "will shake the web-like pillars of tyranny and oppression."

Hashemi Rafsanjani has been the speaker of Qods Day events for many years. Reports of his absence from this year's ceremony have been denied by his office.

Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini named the last Friday in the holy month of Ramadan, Qods Day. Every year since then, Muslims in Iran and some other Muslim countries join demonstrations against Israeli policies on this day.

Iranian protesters to the June presidential elections have announced that they will join Qods Day march to voice their own protest.

Opposition leader, Mehdi Karroubi, and reformist group Association of Combatant Clerics have also rallied their supporters to join the march to protest the alleged fraudulent elections once more.

On the opposite front, chief of police forces Esmail Ahmadi Moghaddam has asked people not to taint this day with political issues because "this is a day for Palestine and should not be diverted from its main objective."

Supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei has also warned people to avoid "disunity and conflicts" and only use slogans in support of Palestine or against Israel.
