Survey indicates that 9 in 10 believe Iran's regime tortures its people, and Iran should sign the UN Convention Against Torture.

With many thanks to the 175 Payvand.com readers, here are the results of the 3-day torture survey.

Q.1 Do you believe Iranian government has tortured its people in the recent months since 2009 election?

Answer Count
Yes 165 (94%)
No 6 (3%)
Don't know 4 (2%)
People who answered question: 175 (100%)
People who skipped question: 0 (0%)

Comment: Almost everyone is convinced that Iran is torturing its people. It may be very hard to ignore the unprecedented data from YouTube, Twitter, facebook , Flickr, eyewitness blogs, etc.

Q.2 Do you believe torture is a viable technique for information gathering?

Answer Count
No 123 (72%)
Yes 34 (20%)
Don't know 15 (9%)
People who answered question: 172 (98%)
People who skipped question: 3 (2%)

Comment: It is difficult to determine if information obtained through torture is valid. Recent forced confessions worked against the Iranian regime; for example, protesters confessed that they received help from foreigners and a few days later Ali Khamenei denied that protesters were linked to foreign governments. Another good survey question could have been - is torture a viable technique for generating fear?

Q.3 Do you believe Islam approves torture?

Answer Count

Yes 53 (30%)
Don't know 30 (17%)
People who answered question: 175 (100%)
People who skipped question: 0 (0%)

Comment: When we drilled down into the data, we noticed that there is a huge gap of opinion between Muslim and non-Muslims. Only 13% of Muslims believe Islam approves torture while 45% non-Muslims believe Islam approves torture. Below are 2 links for both Pro and Con opinions.

Pro-torture Islamic site
Against-torture Islamic site
