Iran: Rezaii proposes establishment of national election committee

Mohsen Rezaii

MASJED SOLEYMAN, Khuzestan Province, Sept. 26 (Mehr News Agency) - Expediency Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaii has put forward a proposal calling for the establishment of a national committee for election affairs without the interference of ruling factions.

"National committee for elections should be established so that the government is barred from involvement in election affairs" and this will increase the people's trust, he said in a meeting with university students in Masjed Soleyman, Khuzestan Province.

Flaws in the previous elections should be corrected otherwise the country's religious democracy would be undermined, he added.

Commenting on the post-election incidents, he said the people's right to protest should be respected and if the protests are legal and the leaders of the protests are committed to legal and ethical ways to air their grievances, state bodies should also accept that protests are a part of the religious democracy and will not cause any trouble.

If presidential candidates and supervisory bodies had cooperated, the post-election problems would not have arisen, Rezaii, a presidential contender in the June election who finished third, stated.

However, he said the problems can be resolved through brotherhood and unity among all people loyal to the Islamic Republic system.
