Friday April 23 at 7:30 pm

This special presentation with Dr. ebadi will be hosted by John Weston, MP for West Vancouver, Sunshine Coast, Sea to Sky Country and Government Liaison to the Persian and Iranian Community.

Dr. Shirin Ebadi was awarded the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her significant and pioneering efforts for democracy and human rights, in particular women's, children's, and refugee rights. She was the first Iranian, and the first Muslim woman to receive the prize.

Born in Northwestern Iran in 1947, Ebadi excelled at school, later becoming a lawyer. At 22, she became the first woman judge in Iran, at the same time continuing her education and earning a doctorate in law.   With the overthrow of the Shah and advent of the Islamic Republic in 1979, Ebadi was demoted to a secretarial position. Eventually obtaining a licence to set up her own practice, Ebadi focussed on cases that involved the unfair treatment of women and children. She continues to represent clients who are dissidents or accused of anti-governmental activities. She is one of the best-known lawyers in Iran.   Founder of the Centre for the Defence of Human Rights in Iran and recipient of twenty-five international awards and honours, Dr. Ebadi is the author of Iran Awakening: A Memoir of Revolution and Hope.   John Weston is the Member of Parliament for West Vancouver, Sunshine Coast and Sea to Sky Country. Elected in October 2008, he served as a member of the Public Accounts and Fisheries Standing Committees and as the Government Liaison to the Persian and Iranian Community. Weston is a lawyer, father, husband and author. He is a nationally-recognized public speaker on constitutional issues, and his numerous writings on government, international law and ethics have been published in newspapers across Canada.
