A group of Iranian journalists called on Iran's Head of Judiciary to release their detained colleagues and to reinstate the Association of Journalists of Iran.
In the post-election events and disputes against
the re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, tens of journalists have been arrested
and the office of Association of Journalists has been shut down.
In an open letter to the judiciary, over 110 journalists express grave concern over the continued incarceration of Iranian journalists and question such policies saying: "Doesn't the arrest of journalists and the banning of the Association of Journalists indicate that the Islamic Republic of Iran can not tolerate journalists and their open criticisms?"
They go on to maintain that such "unjust and illegal confrontations with newspapers, journalists and bloggers" are more effective in destroying the regime's reputation than any article written by the detainees.
The community of journalists and bloggers in Iran have suffered heavy blows in the post-election crackdown on reformists with widespread banning of newspapers and publications coupled with continued arrest of journalists which in some cases have received inappropriately long prison sentences.
They have also been persistently active in trying to secure the release of their peers through open letters to senior officials of the judiciary and condemning the government's harsh treatment of them.
