Iran: Petition In Support Of Dismissed University Faculty Is Stolen!

Source: Mir Hossein Mousavi's facebook

A petition that had been arranged in protest to the dismissal of prominent and independent faculty members in the University of Science and Technology was stolen by "unknown" individuals overnight; this is while only the security had access to the Department of Electrical Engineering where the petition was kept. At nights the doors of the university are closed by the security and any entrance and exit would be controlled by them. Following this ugly and illegal act the students once again organized a new petition and also objected to the fact that the so called "unknown" individuals can enter the university from outside and can have access to the departments while the security should provide safety for the students and the university environment!

The students prepared a new petition after the first one was stollen

Originally students of the Department of Electrical Engineering in University of Science and Technology of Iran (Tehran) by signing a petition protested to the recent policies of Ahmadinejad's Minister of science and Higher Education in dismissing the knowledgeable faculty members who had criticized government's actions especially the illegal arrests and crackdown of student protests following the June 2009 presidential election which the opposition claims was rigged.

In this petition the students specifically condemned the most recent dismissal of two of the respected faculty members of the Department of Electrical Engineering. Dr. Seyyed Ali-Asghar Beheshti and Dr. Mohammad Shahri were fired from their jobs on the first week of the spring semester. Also Prof. Toraj Mohammadi, the chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering, resigned from his job in last weeks of winter following the pressures put on him and in protest to the policies of the president of the university (appointed by Ahmadinejad's Minister of Science) regarding the student activists.

Recently and following the widespread student protests in the aftermath of the presidential election many independent and knowledgeable faculty members of the universities were dismissed from their jobs. The new Minister of Science and Higher Education in Ahmadinejad's administration, Kamran Dneshjoo, who himself has been charged with academic plagiarism by international journals and was the person in charge of the past presidential elections, has publicly announced that he wants to "clean up" the universities!
