MP Majid Nasirpour has criticized government's policy to increase the population, saying it will yield negative consequences for the country. On the one hand, the government calls on people to be content with living in small houses, while on the other hand encourages them to increase the population, Nasirpour told the Mehr News Agency on Tuesday.
These two policies contradict each other, are
against the law, and will lead to breaking the norms in family ties, he added.
Nasirpour referred to the Atiyeh Mehr plan proposed by President Ahmadinejad, saying it's good to help the majority of people financially, but injecting that sum of money to certain groups in the society will create a sense of discrimination.
Under the Atiyeh Mehr plan, the Mehr Imam Reza Fund will be opened for each newly born child after 1389 (started March 21, 2010). The government will initially deposit 10 million rials (about $1000) into each account. The plan will include babies born inside the country as well as those born abroad.
The fund will gradually increase with savings made by parents until she/he reaches the age of 18. Then the owners of the accounts will have the right to withdraw from the account for different purposes including education, marriage, housing, and Hajj pilgrimage.
Implementation of Atiyeh Mehr Plan started on July 27.
Regarding the numerous problems of the society, implementation of such plans will not benefit the country, said Nasirpour, deputy chairman of the Majlis Social Affairs Committee.
Elsewhere, he said over the past years, the Islamic Republic of Iran has tried to implement the policy of controlling the population growth due to sanitary and economic issues as well as limited resources in the country.
The reasons for implementation of such policy still exist, Nasirpour noted.
It was predicted that the population of the country would reach 95 million by 2025, but considering the government's new trend, it will hit 120 million by that time, the official stated.
Nasirpour went on to say that Majlis insists on the implementation of the law and will deal with any measures against it.
