|Mir Hossein Mousavi,
Iranian opposition leader issued a letter addressing political
prisoners on hunger strike in Evin Prison urging them to end their
Kaleme Website reports that while Mousavi expressed his support for their demands, he writes: "Now that your message and that of your valiant families has spread across the country and the globe, people are concerned for your health because you are the country's Green resources."
He also urged prison officials to "respect detainee rights even according to the inadequate regulations in place."
Earlier other Iranian political figures such as
Mehdi Karroubi, Abdollah Nouri and Parvin Fahimi called on the political
prisoners to end their strike.
RejaiShahr prisoners also issued an open letter in support of their peers at Evin Prison but urged them to break their strike.
The reformist organization, Islamic Iran Participation Front urged the public to offer their support and solidarity to the prisoners and their families.
The reformist organization has also urged all those who participated in the June 15 street demonstrations last year to "express their support and solidarity with the section 350 prisoners and their concerned families who are all on hunger strike, by joining their hunger strike."
17 political prisoners in Evin Prison started a
hunger strike twelve days ago to protest against being mistreated by their jail
keepers and to also protest the substandard conditions of the prison.
Some of the families of these detainees, who recently started their own hunger strike on the outside, have been threatened with arrest by Iranian security personnel should they speak to the media.
