Qeshm is an Iranian island situated in the Strait of Hormuz off the south coast of Iran and east of the Persian Gulf. Qeshm Island is located a few kilometers off the southern coast of Iran, opposite the port cities of Bandar Abbas and Bandar Khamir.
The natural environment of the Persian Gulf is very rich with good fishing grounds, extensive coral reefs, and abundant pearl oysters, even though its ecology has come increasingly under pressure from the heavy industrialization and in particular the repeated major petroleum spillages associated with recent wars fought in the region.
