A crackdown has been launched on illegal hunters who torment
and slaughter brown bears in western Iran amid rising concerns over the species'
Investigations were initiated with a video, which was sent from one mobile phone to another via Bluetooth streaming, a Mehr News Agency report said on Saturday.
The film depicted hunters tracking down and killing a female brown bear and her cub.
Conservation agents seized two guns and a large amount of explosives from illegal hunters. Two hunters, armed with G3 rifles, fled the scene.
Environmental activists have expressed concern about the cruel practices being used against the bear population in Sefid-Kouh in Khorramabad, which is located in the western Iranian province of Lorestan.
"These violators are endangering wildlife that belongs to all of us here in Iran who obey the laws," Mohammad-Hossein Bazgir, president of the Lorestan Department of Environment told the news agency.
"And it's our job to make sure that wildlife resources are protected," he concluded.
