Mohsen Hashemi, managing director of Tehran and Suburbs Subway Company, has told Tehran SAMA that the fourth line will connect east Tehran to west by the end of the year and line 3 will be made operational next year to connect Ozgol in northeast Tehran to Eslamshahr along Saveh Road.
He added that 7 km of line 3 tunnels from Vali Asr Crossroads to Sohrevardi avenue have been dug and digging northern and southern tunnels is also going on. Line 3 will be among the most important lines as it connects southwest Tehran to northeast, crosses busy parts of the capital city and can alleviate traffic problems. The line should become fully operational in 3 years. About 7 km will be finished by next year followed by 12 km in 2012 and 16 km in 2013.

70% of Bus Passengers Use Electronic Cards

Tehran Municipality has been promoting a plan to replace paper tickets with electronic cards and the cards are also supposed to be used throughout public transportation fleet, even in taxis. Many measures should be taken first since the plan needs powerful software and hardware facilities.

Ja'far Tashakkori Hashemi, Tehran deputy mayor for transportation and traffic, told Tehran SAMA that about 70 percent of citizens are now using electronic cards as ticket and certain taxi lines such as those serving at airports, and call taxis have been given priority for using electronic services.
He added that Tehran Municipality was provided needed hardware and software for the projects and, at present, almost all private and public buses have been equipped with special card reader devices.
He noted that electronic tickets will be generalized to all modalities of public transportation to gradually phase out paper tickets.
