Fifty Iranian political prisoners were released last night from Evin Prison in Tehran. Shahabeddin Tabatabai, Islamic Iran Participation Front member and head of reformist youth in support of Mousavi and Khatami, was one of the high profile detainees which was temporarily released last night, according to Neday-e Sabz-e Azadi website.
Tabatabai, who has been sentenced to five years in prison, was released by the authorities for a period of five days on an 800-million-touman ($800,000) bail.
Member of Human Rights Reporters, Parisa Kakai, and student activist, Maziar Samii were also among the detainees released last night.
Member of reformist group, Nehzat-e Azadi, Khosrow Ghashghavi was also released on bail. Currently 12 members of this organization, including its general-secretary Ebrahim Yazdi, are still in prison.
Kalameh website also reports that Hamzeh Naghdi, director of the Jomhouriat website has been sentenced to 16 years in prison and 6 billion toumans ($6 million) in fines. Hamzeh Karami had testified against himself and the family of the moderate cleric and Chairman of Iran's Expediency Council, Ayatollah Rafsanjani.
In the past eight months, over five thousand election protesters have been arrested and amongst them are scores of social and political activists, as well as journalists.
A number of them have been sentenced to long prison terms and even execution by the revolutionary court.
