IRAN DiVERSO: Black Or White? Group exhibition of Iranian Artists in Italy

23 February - 10 April 2010, VERSO Artecontemporanea, Torino - ITALY

Verso Artecontemporanea continues its innovative curatorial project with the group exhibition IRAN diVERSO: Black Or White?

This exhibition starts off from the aim of showing the truth and the complexity of Iranian contemporary art.

The show exclusively includes "Black and White" works which lead to a reflection on the question "does the world really need "Black and White" perceptions to recognise a reality?" In this context, "Black and White" are not synonyms of right or wrong, good or bad; they underline the diversity and the complexity of a Nation.

IRAN diVerso: Black Or White? tells a story of presence and absence, shades and highlights, and all the range of intermediate tones. The works selected, mostly conceived and produced for this occasion, contain the legacies of a culture rich in tradition and coming to terms with a contemporary world.

For centuries Iranian artists have created fabulous imagery based on traditional narrative; a fantastic world away from the harshness of everyday life. Yet, Iran is today in metamorphosis and artists do not attempt to disguise or hide reality anymore. On the contrary, it is the everyday aspect of their lifestyle that has the main role and is embodied in the most innovative artworks. All this, together with a young and vibrant critique of society and regime, make the Iranian art scene one of the most animated in the Asian continent.

Artists in exhibition: Sara Abbasian, Maryam Amini, Fereydoun Ave, Amirali Bashiri, Ala Dehghan, Parastou Forouhar, Barbad Golshiri, Arash Hanaei, Sahand Hesamiyan, Alireza Jodey, Abbas Kowsari, Farsad Labbauf, Behdad Lahooti, Fatemeh Fakhraiemanesh, Amir Mobed, Amitis Motevalli, Arash Sedaghatkish, Hadi Tabatabai, Jinoos Taghizadeh in collaboration with Zahra Nabavi, Newsha Tavakolian.
