Iran presents 11 proposals to break Gaza blockade

DAMASCUS, June 30 (Mehr News Agency) -- Iranian Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani has presented eleven proposals to help break the blockade of Gaza at a meeting of the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of the Islamic Conference Member States (PUOICM).

Larijani announced the proposals in a speech at the PUOICM meeting in Damascus on Wednesday.

The Iranian parliament speaker praised Syria for its efforts to host the PUOICM meeting and said that the meeting sends the message that the Muslim world is very concerned about the aggressive policies of the Zionist regime.

Larijani stated that Islamic countries should not content themselves with only issuing statements condemning Israel and proposed eleven practical steps to help break the three-year blockade of Gaza.

Larijani said the United Nations General Assembly Third Committee has investigated the report of the UN Fact-Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict, known as the Richard Goldstone report, and urged the UN Human Rights Council to announce its views on the Israeli atrocities as soon as possible.

He added that lawyers from the Muslim world should also be involved in the issue.

The UN Security Council has repeatedly illustrated its inability to take a hard line toward the Zionist regime, nevertheless, pressure arising from international public opinion compelled the Security Council to adopt a number of resolutions on Israel's crimes, Larijani said.

He added that efforts should be made to make sure that punitive measures are introduced if the resolutions are not implemented.

He also said that the International Atomic Energy Agency and the UN Security Council should not turn a blind eye toward the fact that the Zionist regime has stockpiled a large arsenal of nuclear weapons.

Larijani said that during the course of negotiations over Iran's nuclear program, the foreign minister of a European country which is a permanent member of the UN Security Council told him that even if Iran were to produce nuclear weapons, it would be less important than Iran's stance toward the Palestinian issue.

The Iranian parliament speaker stated that the PUOICM meeting, with the assistance of various human rights and anti-war NGOs, could lay the groundwork for the organization of a larger conference to offer help to the Palestinian people.

He also advised the member parliaments of PUOICM to make efforts to approve measures to sever all political, economic, and cultural ties with the Zionist regime, with the PUOICM secretariat overseeing the matter and informing the members of the outcome.

Larijani also urged the member parliaments of PUOICM to press their governments, through legal measures, to work to expel the Zionist regime from international and regional organizations.

In addition, he proposed that the PUOICM members should exchange a list of Israeli companies and enterprises every six months in order to be better equipped to boycott all commercial activities with the Zionist regime.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian parliament speaker suggested that the parliaments of PUOICM members pass laws to prevent Israeli vessels from entering and anchoring in their ports.

He also asked the PUOICM member parliaments to adopt laws to ban Israeli airliners from entering their countries' airspace.

In addition, Larijani asked the PUOICM members to dispatch a humanitarian assistance flotilla to Gaza and stated that the PUOICM secretariat should monitor and coordinate these efforts.

The Iranian Majlis speaker said that the PUOICM secretariat should pursue the decisions made at the meeting, agree on an appropriate level of funding for the implementation of those decisions, and submit the results to the members at the next PUOICM meeting.

Larijani added that three parliamentary speakers should be appointed to supervise these activities.
