Iranian Parliament has voted to extend City and Township Council terms another two years. Mohammad Dehghan announced that the Guardian Council has approved the Parliament's decision and therefore council terms will be increased to six years.

Dehghan added that according to the new
legislation, elections for the fourth term of City and Township Councils will
coincide with the next presidential elections.
The City and Township Councils were due for elections this year but the new law has thus extended their activity for another two years and postponed the elections until 2012.
Some analysts suggest that in view of the widespread protests that were triggered by the 2009 presidential elections, Islamic Republic authorities want to avoid elections until the political atmosphere is more stable.
Still Mahmoud Ahmadinejad administration had expressed opposition against this bill.
