Russia condemned the United States and the European Union for imposing unilateral sanctions on Iran on top of the measures approved in the UN resolution.
Russian Deputy foreign minister sharply criticized imposing further sanctions on Iran and warned that these sanctions could have an adverse effect since the West could lose the support of Moscow and the coordinated efforts to curb Iran's nuclear activities.
Reuters reports that Sergei Ryabkov expressed great "disappointment" for not being consulted before the steps taken independently by the US and the European Union against Iran.
European Union leaders approved tighter sanctions against Iran today, Thursday which includes blocking investment in Iran's oil and gas industries. The US Treasury has also imposed further sanctions against another Iranian bank, a number of Iranian companies and individual members of Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps.
The extended EU sanctions which will take effect in the next few weeks targets trade and dual-use items. Iran's banking, insurance and transportation sectors will also be affected by the EU sanctions.
"New investment, technical assistance and transfers of technologies, equipment and services related to these areas, in particular related to refining, liquefaction and Liquefied Natural Gas technology" are also included in the EU energy sanctions on Iran.
Russia maintains that these steps "are not just harmful, they undermine the very foundation of our joint work with our partners in the sextet and the Security Council."
