Jafar Panahi |
Prominent Iranian filmmaker, Jafar Panahi was
arrested by Iranian security forces at his home along with his wife, daughter
and 15 other guests.
Reformist website Jaras spoke with Panaihi's son who reports that security
officers raided the house and searched it for over five hours confiscating
various documents.
He added that a number of the guests were also
connected with the film industry such as Mohammad Rasulov and Ebrahim Ghafari as
well as two other filmmakers, Mahnaz Mohammadi and Rokhsareh Ghaem-Maghami.
Jafar Panahi has repeatedly come out in support of election protesters and the
Green Movement in the post-election events for which the government has in turn
confronted him on several occasions.
He
was arrested at the commemoration ceremony for the post-election victims at
Behesht-e Zahra cemetery in September. Later he was forbidden to leave the
country in connection with a prospective film deal in France and in February, he
was banned from travelling which impeded him from attending a panel discussion
in Berlin Film Festival.
Jafar Panahi, the creator of internationally
recognized films such as "The White Balloon" and "The Circle," has often
revealed a unique view of Iran's social ills in his work.
Since the election protests to the alleged vote rigging in the presidential
election began in June, thousands of opposition supporters have been detained,
and many prominent reformist figures and journalist have received heavy prison
terms.
