As the Iranian year comes to a close by March 21st, Tehran's streets are bustling with shoppers who are getting ready for the Persian New Year. This has increased the load on Tehran Metro as many residents are trying to avoid the busy streets and take advantage of the cheaper rides.

Recording about 459 million passenger rides in 2009, Tehran Metro is among the top 20 busiest underground railways in the world, according to the managing director of Tehran Urban Metro Operation Jafar Rabi'i. Every day about 1.5 million people travel by Tehran metro, making it one of the world busiest metros. This is expected to rise to about 6 million passengers per day when the new lines become operational.
