Google and the Paris-based media watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF) on March 11 honored a collective of Iranian women bloggers for their reporting on women's issues and last year's postelection unrest.

The journalists of the website, which offers news and analysis about Iran's women's movement and the One Million Signatures Campaign against discriminatory laws, were given the Net Citizen award, a new prize presented by Google and RSF to defend freedom of expression online. website

Google and RSF said the website, created in 2006, has "has become a point of reference for information on women's rights in Iranian society."

AFP quoted RSF as saying that dozens of the site's contributors have been detained for reporting online on the mass antigovernment demonstrations that broke out amid claims of fraud following last year's reelection of President Mahmud Ahmadinejad.

"The Iranian women's movement has always shown resistance.... Now the movement is bringing its experience and methods of working democratically into cyberspace," said one of its members, Parvin Ardalan, accepting the award at Google's Paris offices.
