In a meeting with one of the youth branches of his National Trust Party, Mehdi Karoubi said that the Islamic Republic has been completely "derailed" and fallen into "despotism."

The opposition leader maintained that the elections in the Islamic Republic have become completely "inert" and turned into a mere "formality."

He claimed that numerous hands interfere in the elections and in terms of the Guardian Council, other than the Chairman of the Council, the other members have no influence at all.

Mehdi Karoubi maintained that the roots of the recent political turmoil go back to the eighth round of parliamentary elections when the Guardian Council rejected the candidacy of scores of reform candidates in order to secure the parliamentary seats for pro-Ahmadinejad hardliners.

He added: "We are saying that we need to study the roots of the issues at hand but the establishment refuses to examine the issues and rather than addressing the problems, they attribute them to foreign conspiracies."

Mehdi Karoubi once more questioned the legitimacy of Ahmadinejad's government saying: "How can we believe that despite the high inflation and protests and unemployment and weak international relations, this government could have increased its popular votes in its second round in the elections?"

He added: "What miracle or feat did they manage that could explain people's desire to give them a second term in presidency?"

He maintained that in a 370-page report, the opposition has provided the authorities with documents concerning "interference of managers, distribution of money, interference of the armed forces and confiscating ballot boxes" but they still insist that we are "the fifth column and are collaborating with enemies."

He continued: "They know full well that we are not spies and do not get our direction from foreign elements, we are concerned for the system and struggle for its protection. But we stand by our protest."
