A number of Iranian political and social
activists called for the release of Omid Montazeri, a detained law student who
was detained by the Ministry of Intelligence on December 28 upon inquiring about
his detained mother.
Omid Montazeri has been charged with "activity against national security and propaganda against the regime" for which he has been sentenced to six years in prison.
In his trial, he was denied access to his own attorney and he refused to give power of attorney to the court's defense lawyer.
The letter states that a six-year sentence for Montazeri is an evident sign of lack of impartiality in dealing with the accused. It also adds that denial of his right to his choice of attorney "is not only against the law but also contrary to any sense of fairness and justice."
The letter recognizes the release of a number of post-election detainees in recent days on the occasion of the Iranian New Year and thus urges for the release of Omid Montazeri in the same vein.
Mahin Fahimi, mother of Omid Montazeri, is a member of the Mothers of Peace Committee. She was arrested at her home last December along with some of her guests.
Omid Montazeri's arrest proceeded his mothers when he arrived at the tracking office of the Ministry of Intelligence to inquire about his mother.
Mahin Fahimi was released on bail on February 9 but her son remained is prison and later sentenced to six years in prison.
The Montazeri family have also suffered the loss of Hamid Montazeri, Omid Montazeri's father, who was executed by the Islamic Republic in 1988.
