The wife of Isa Saharkhiz, journalist and advocate for the freedom of press in Iran and one of the reformist political activists, wrote a letter to her daughter to give her hope that although his father along with many other political prisoners were not released for the Persian New Year, there will come the day that he and others will be free soon and that day is the real day for celebration, the day that there will be no prison and no prisoner in the country.
Isa Saharkhiz was arrested on July 3rd, 2009, shortly after the June presidential election in Iran. The opposition claims the election was rigged and says a coup government has taken over.
Despite the pressures from interrogators to extract a forced confession, Saharkhiz has not yielded. According to his son Mehdi, Isa Saharkhiz who suffers from high blood pressure, has high spirit but has become very weak because of having been on hunger strike. Isa Saharkhiz's consequent weakness led to his fainting during morning prayer on the first day of the new Persian year and his falling on the ground, as a result of which he was transferred to the health clinic. After this incident a request for his temporary release for health reasons was submitted to officials, but has not yet been accepted.
Despite having been illegally detained for 269 days, Saharkhiz has not yet been charged with anything and his lawyer has not yet been given any information about him.
