Iranian judiciary urged to confront corruption

Source: Radio Zamaneh

Iranian judiciary is being pressured into dealing with economic corruption in upper strata of the Islamic Republic government.

Iran falls to 168 in Corruption Perception Index 2009

Sadegh Larijani, Head of the Judiciary told a meeting of judiciary officials: "In our fight against economic corruption, there are rumors of opposition from certain individuals which unfortunately have also gotten into the media with amateur coverage."

Larijani maintained: "The judiciary will never allow people to take possession of public property and the treasury for themselves and their children through cheating and falsifying documents."

These comments come at a time when Elias Naderan, an Iranian MP has accused Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's vice-president, Mohammadreza Rahimi of running a corruption ring.

Yesterday Naderan in a meeting with a group of university students said: "In government meetings it has been announced that whoever speaks out against Mr. Rahimi will be dealt with."

He once more contended that Rahimi is a liar and his credentials are also fabricated; therefore, he is unfit for his position in the government.

Rahimi denies all these accusations and claims that he has always been a conscientious protector of public treasury.
