Iranian musician Loris Tjeknavorian is to conduct the Armenian chamber
orchestra at
benefit concerts for Tehran's Mahak Charity Society from May 26 to June 1.
There will be six concerts over the seven days, including works by Bach, Vivaldi
and Strauss and by Tjeknavorian himself, and they will take place in the
auditorium of the Mahak Hospital in Darabad.
Iranian Santour
virtuoso Ardavan Kamkar and prominent Kamancheh player Ardeshir Kamkar
will also have solo performances in the program.
This is the orchestra's third music festival organized by the Mahak Charity -
supporting Iranian children suffering from cancer. The proceeds from the
concerts will help providing services for these children.
Loris Tjeknavorian
The orchestra performed
several pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart during
previous programs as well as Kurdish and Iranian suites and pieces composed by
Tjeknavorian.
About two decades ago a mother who had experienced
having a child with cancer and had witnessed first hand the difficulties faced
by her child, pledged to set up a center that would act as a refuge for children
and their families in a similar situation. With the assistance of the same
friends and relatives who had helped her through her own ordeal, a board of
trustees was selected and MAHAK Society to Support Children suffering from
Cancer was set up as a non profit, non-governmental organization and was
registered under number 6567 in 1991. MAHAK has been active from that day on in
helping children with cancer and their families.
