Iranian authorities arrested Ali Gholizadeh, an Iranian student activist, on Friday in Mashhad.
According to the Human Rights Reporters Committee three armed
officers in plain clothes arrested Gholizadeh at his father's home. Gholizadeh
is one of the so called "starred" students who are deprived from continuing
higher education by the order of the ministry of intelligence.
Gholizadeh was active in Mehdi Karroubi's presidential campaign and was also
arrested previously for his political activities two years ago in Mashhad.
Reportedly the reason for his arrest is "recent mobilization of the
Consolidation Bureau to re-energize this student organization."
Gholizadeh was in a car accident last week and is reportedly suffering from
ill-health.
In the past year and a half, following the disputed victory of Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad in the presidential elections of 2009, the government has cracked
down heavily on election protesters. The Consolidation Bureau, Iran's largest
student organization, has been a major target of government retaliation against
protesters.
