'Military preparedness discouraged Bush from attacking Iran': Yahya Safavi

Source: Mehr News Agency, Tehran

Major General Yahya Safavi has commented that the Supreme Leader's insight and military preparedness were the factors that discouraged the United States under George W. Bush from launching military strike on Iran.

Safavi, the former commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), made the remarks as Bush revealed in his memoirs that he had ordered the Pentagon to plan an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities.

"Undoubtedly, the wise decisions and policies of the powerful and insightful Leader of the Islamic Revolution... prevented the Americans from (taking military) approach toward Iran," said safavi who currently serves as senior military advisor to the Supreme Leader.

Iran's military preparedness also deterred the U.S. from attacking Iran, the general explained.

The preparedness of armed forces, especially missile tests by the IRGC, made Washington to think seriously about the consequences of military attack against Iran, the former IRGC chief opined.

He also said that the readiness of Basij volunteer forces to be martyred for their faith was another reason that the U.S. didn't dare to attack Iran.
