Nigeria Warning Over Iran Arms Shipment

Source: RFE/RL

Nigeria has vowed to report Iran to the United Nations Security Council if Nigerian investigators find evidence that an apparently illegal arms shipment seized in Nigeria violated UN sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

Nigerian Foreign Minister Odein Ajumogobia said Iran has agreed to allow Nigerian security agents to question one Iranian man who has taken refuge in the Iranian Embassy in Nigeria in connection with the case.

But the foreign minister said Nigerian agents have not been granted access to another Iranian at the embassy because he apparently has diplomatic immunity.

The Nigerian foreign minister met on November 11 with his Iranian counterpart, Manuchehr Mottaki, who had flown to Nigeria to discuss the case.

Iran is forbidden under United Nations sanctions, imposed over Tehran's nuclear program, from selling or exporting of any kind of weapons, directly or indirectly.

The weapons, including artillery rockets and explosives, were found in 13 shipping containers Nigeria's port of Lagos in late October.

An international cargo shipper based in France has said it picked up the containers, which had been labeled as holding building materials, from Bandar Abbas port in southern Iran.

Reports say the intended final recipient of the weapons remains unclear.
