Iranian opposition leader, Mehdi Karroubi attacked Iranian hardliner, Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati for inciting greater violence within society and acting against the independence of the judicial and the legislative branches of the country.

Saham News reports that Mehdi Karroubi slammed Jannati for encouraging courts to keep political prisoners behind bars in his latest Friday sermon in Tehran.

Karroubi added that the Revolutionary Guards and the Ministry of Intelligence act under Jannati's consultation.

The opposition leader maintained that Ayatollah Jannati's words reveal that, as people have been saying, the judiciary has indeed lost its independence.

Reportedly some interrogators have told political detainees that they are in complete charge of their cases and judges have no influence.

In the past year and a half, the government has arrested scores of protesters in connection with allegation of fraud in the re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The opposition maintains that the political prisoners have been denied their constitutional rights in the legal proceedings against them.

Karroubi also accused Jannati of defiling the image of the clergy in public minds.

He went on to say that Jannati has been threatening Members of Parliament in order to cut off their supervisory role over the government.

Ayatollah Jannati has recently announced that the Guardian Council needs to keep the action of MPs under greater scrutiny.
