International Committee of Lawyers for Human Rights issued a statement condemning the arrest of five Iranian lawyers in Tehran and calling for their release. The arrest of the five lawyers was confirmed yesterday by Tehran's Prosecutor, Abbas Jafari Dowlatabadi.
According to the statement, Hajar (Sarah)
Sabbaghian, Maryam Karbasi and Maryam Kianersi were arrested in Tehran's
international airport on Saturday and taken to Evin Prison. In addition another
two lawyers, whose identities have not been announced, were taken to an unknown
The Committee maintains that the arrest of these lawyers without written summons is contrary to Iran's legal regulations. Therefore, they urge the Iranian Bar Association to make a formal complaint to Iranian judiciary.
They also urge all international human rights organizations to take a clear stance against the arrest of these lawyers.
Two days ago, head of Iranian judiciary criticized Iranian lawyers for failing to "protect the dignity" of advocacy in Iran in the interviews they give out to foreign media.
Several Iranian lawyers have been arrested in the past months. Shirin Ebadi issued a joint statement with the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran condemning the "systematic attacks against human rights activists and lawyers."
The International Committee for Lawyers was established this month with the aim of defending the rights of threatened Iranian lawyers.
