On November 20th, 2010 "Young Asia Festival" in the German city Cologne, will host a Persian Piano Music Eve. In the event, Europe-based pianists Pooyan Azadeh and Pejman Akbarzadeh will perform their interpretations from Persian music on the piano. The music critic Mahmoud Khoshnam will also deliver a lecture on the history of this instrument in Persian music.
The first piano was imported to Persia/Iran in early 19th century. It was a gift from Napoleon Bonaparte to Fath-Ali Shah. But on that time there was no pianist in the country to play that. Serious efforts to use the piano in Persian music goes back to mid-19th century, when a few Western music instructors in Tehran and Iranian musicians who have been trained in Russia and Germany started to use this instrument. Since that time, four generations of pianist have presented Persian piano music in their own styles.
The pianists Pooyan Azadeh and Pejman Akbarzadeh, who have moved to Europe since some years ago belong to the youngest generation of pianists who preserve and propagate Persian piano music in different styles.
Pooyan Azadeh (b. 1979) started his music studies in Tehran and currently studies music education in Martin-Luther-University, Germany. Pooyan's publications include the book, "National Anthems of the World", which was nominated for the UNESCO Prize for Peace Education; "The Music of the Sangsar Nomads"; "The European Piano School", which he translated into Persian, as well as a CD of Persian folklore transcribed for piano, entitled "Yeylagh". As pianist, Pooyan received numerous awards and honours at competitions.
Pejman Akbarzadeh (b. 1980) received the first lessons of music in his hometown Shiraz and later in Tehran from Farman Behboud. At the age of 18 he wrote a book about Persian composers and conductors which became a source for the Encyclopedia Iranica. He has performed various Persian piano recitals in Europe and in 2009 finished his first cinematic project; a documentary on "Hayedeh: Legendary Persian Diva". Currently he is a Senior producer at Radio Zamaneh in Amsterdam.
