Iran claims 4 more medals at Asian Games

Iranian athletes have kept up their fine performance in China's southern city of Guangzhou where the 16th edition of the Asian Games, Asiad, is underway.

Alireza Nassrazadany, 25, won the men's under 74 kg Taekwondo gold beating Dimitry Kim of Uzbakistan in the final while Yousef Karami, 27, beat Korea's Park Hyun-yong to bag the men's under 87 kg gold.

Taekwondo fighter Susan Haji Pourgoli fetched the bronze medal for Iran on Thursday in women's under-57 kg category.

Lee Sung-hye from South Korea defeated Chinese taekwondo fighter Hou Yuzhuo to win the gold medal.

Earlier in the day, another Iranian female taekwondo competitor Samaneh Sheshpari grabbed the bronze medal in women's under-53 kg. Sarita Phongsri of Thailand won the gold medal after she managed to beat her Vietnamese opponent Nguyen Thi Hoai Thu 4-3 in the final.

In men's under-80 kg section, Iran's taekwondo fighter Farzad Abdollahi took the bronze medal. Jordanian fighter Nabil Hassan won the gold medal, beating Nessar Ahmad Bahawi of Afghanistan 4-3 in the final.

Also on Wednesday, Iranian weightlifter Asghar Ebrahimi claimed the silver medal in men's 94 kg with the total lift of 362 kilograms. Ilya Ilyin of Kazakhstan won the gold medal after he lift a total of 394 kilograms overhead.

South Korean Kim Min-jae secured the third place.

Iranian athletes have taken their tally to 21 medals at the 16th edition of the Asian Games in Guangzhou.

Chinese athletes are in the lead with a total of 202 medals, followed by South Koreans who fetched 107 medals altogether.

Up to now, Chinese athletes have bagged 109 gold, 47 silver and 46 bronze medals. The South Koreans have won 37 gold, 30 silver and 40 bronze medals so far.

Japan is in the third place with 21 gold, 45 silver and 38 bronze medals, the official website of the 16th Asian Games said.

Iran ranks fifth in the ongoing event.

The 16th Asian Games opened in Guangzhou, China, on November 12. Athletes from 45 countries will compete against one another in 476 events in 42 sports until November 27.
