Cash benefits to be paid out to Iranian families starting tomorrow

Iranian low-income families in north-eastern Iran will be the first families to receive government cash benefits to counteract the effects of rising prices anticipated by the cutting of public subsidies.

Mehr news agency reports that the authorities announced that $81 will be deposited into their accounts tomorrow and added that by next week, other provinces will receive their benefits as well.

It is not clear for how long the families will receive this benefit and the authorities maintained that the money cannot be withdrawn until the cutting of subsidies actually takes effect.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's government is cutting Iran's public subsidies which have for years kept down the price of energy and food staples in the country.

While analysts have predicted that basic needs will become unaffordable for many, Ahmadinejad has rejected these predictions proposing that direct cash handouts to low-income families would only redirect these subsidies to the right pockets.

According to Behrouz Moradi, project manager for the restructuring of the subsidies, 98 percent of the applications for family benefits have been approved.
