Iran advanced to the knockout stage of the Futsal Grand Prix Brazil 2010 by beating Portugal on Tuesday night. Iran defeated its European rival 5-3 at the Newton Faria Hall in Anapolis and qualified for the knockout stage as the leading team of the Group D.
Mohammad Taheri, Ehsan Zahmatkesh, Asghar Hassanzadeh, Masoud Daneshvar, and Javad Asghari Moqaddam scored goals for Iran while Joel, Arnold and Cardinal scored Portugal's goals.
Iran is scheduled to play Argentina on Thursday while Portugal will have to face futsal powerhouse Spain.
"I am satisfied with the way my team played against Portugal. We defeated a well-organized team. Iran would rather play Argentina than Spain in the next stage," Iran coach Hossein Shams said.
Brazil is the tournament's most successful team with five championships and Iran is number two by winning second place twice.
Brazil's Futsal Grand Prix is an international competition similar to the FIFA Futsal World Championship, but the difference is that the participant countries are invited by the organizers and the host nation.
