Hamid Baghai, head of Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization of Iran, announced that the Cylinder of Cyrus the Great has finally arrived in Iran after 40 years.
Fars news agency reports that according to the Cultural
Heritage Organization the Cylinder arrived in Iran from the
British Museum today.
The Cylinder of Cyrus the Great will remain in Iran for four years while the last time it came to Iran it was displayed for only 10 days.
Hamid Baghai stated that a delegation from British Museum will be present in the ceremony of putting the Cylinder on display tomorrow.
The Cylinder of Cyrus the Great was built in 539 BC by the order of Cyrus, first Achaemenid king of Iran. The sayings and commands of Cyrus are inscribed in Akkadian cuneiform on the clay cylinder and many experts have referred to the cylinder as the first human rights charter in history.
The cylinder was scheduled to arrive in Iran last year but the British Museum decided that in the volatile political situation after the controversial re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, it would postpone the loan.
The arrival of the Cylinder was realized after repeated protests from the Iranian authorities.
A number of Iranian groups outside Iran have protested against this loan citing the Islamic Republic's lack of interest in Iran's history prior to Islam and fears of possible damage to this historical document as the reasons for their concern.
