Ahmadinejad meets Syrian leader in Damascus


TEHRAN, Sept. 18 (Mehr News Agency) - President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad held talks with his Syrian counterpart Bashar Assad on the latest regional and international developments in Damascus on Saturday.

Ahmadinejad arrived in Damascus before flying to the U.S. to attend a UN General Assembly session and the Millennium Development Goals summit which will be attended by 140 heads of state.

Further cooperation between Iran and Syria could benefit regional and international peace and security, the Iranian president told Assad.

Commenting on Palestine, Ahmadinejad reiterated Iran's position that the only solution to the Palestinian crisis is to take Palestinians' opinion into consideration.

The Syrian president, for his part, described Tehran-Damascus ties as "strategic", saying promotion of bilateral cooperation would serve the interests of the regional states.

The president headed for Algiers for talks with the Algerian president after leaving Damascus.
